PID roasting temperature control
The Israeli company Coffee-tech has been producing practical automatic roasters for several years without the need for human intervention in the roasting process. How does it actually work? Will you turn on the roaster, pour green coffee and tell you to empty the coffee just before burning? Or do you have to stand at the roastery and control the roasting cycle even though it is controlled automatically, so you actually roast and all the benefits of this machine will be lost?
I had the opportunity to try the Strada coffee machine, which breaks our captivity about espresso. I spent two days in the La Marzocco factory on training, where I could focus mainly on this device. Before the training, I read a little bit, watched some videos and so he roughly knew what awaited me. In our store, we use a GS3 coffee machine with a paddle, which also allows you to play with the pressure a bit, but to profile the pressure, as Strada can, it's a long way off.
Espresso Gaggia year of production 1956-58
We got our hands on this beautiful piece. It is a professional Gaggia lever coffee machine from the 50th century. The coffee machine is not equipped with an electric pump, but with a lever system, where the espresso is prepared at variable water pressure by means of a spring and a piston.
Turn off the coffee machine for the night?
But that's the question! Logically, one could answer that, of course, turn it off. When the coffee machine is switched off, it does not consume any energy. But this theory has its opponents, surprisingly, there are quite a few. I'd even guess it's 50 to 50 if you want a "fifty fifty". The second camp also has strong arguments. The coffee machine does not suffer so much from stretching and re-shrinking of metal parts and thus there are no leaks in the joints. The coffee machine consumes much more electricity when heated from a cold state than during a night 8-10 hour break when the coffee machine is running, but thanks to no operation, its consumption is negligible.
