ORIGIN
Dukunde Kawa is a coffee cooperative, also known as Dukunde Kawa Musasa, which was founded in 2000. It is located in the north of Rwanda, in the Gakenke region. The cooperative grows high-quality coffee at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,200 meters above sea level in the mountains with living volcanic soil. Dukunde Kawa currently has 1193 coffee farmers and produces up to 12 containers of green coffee per year. Coffee from their production won the Cup of Excellence in independent panels in various locations in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018.
CULTIVATION
Coffee is grown on this farm with an emphasis on high quality. The coffee plantations are located on rich volcanic soil in a hilly landscape, between 1800 and 2200 meters above sea level. Farmers carefully monitor growing conditions, including optimal irrigation and shade tree management, to ensure the ideal environment for coffee plants.
PROCESSING
After harvesting, the cherries are processed using the washed method. This includes fermentation, rinsing and drying of the grain on African drying flats. This process ensures the removal of impurities and the development of the delicate flavors and aromas of the coffee. Farmers follow best practices and pay careful attention to every step of the process to achieve the high quality and unique character of this coffee.
