The farm is run by Gill and Luciana Melo and their three children. The Coffee O'Melo group is a family business with three farms (Espigão do Palmitão | Santa Luzia | Esperança). These are located in the municipalities of Campos Altos and Pratinha within the Cerrado Mineiro/Minas Gerais designation of origin, and their altitude can vary from 980 to 1,130 meters above sea level. The size of the farm is 118 ha, soil type: Latossolo Vermelho, age of the trees: 15 years.

Varieties

The Mundo Novo variety is a hybrid of two well-known coffee varieties, Bourbon and Typica. It originated in Brazil in 1943 and became one of the most widespread varieties in Central and South America. It is known for its good resistance to disease and fungal diseases, making it a popular choice for coffee growers.

In terms of taste, the Mundo Novo variety can be characterized as slightly sweet, with subtle fruity and floral notes. It has a medium full body and a slightly acidic profile. Although the taste of coffee can be affected by various factors, including climate, soil and processing, the Mundo Novo variety usually provides a balanced and pleasant coffee with smooth and rich flavors.

Cultivation

With family heritage in mind and a strong commitment to the future, the new generation of coffee producers at Coffee O'Melo - Edu, Laura and Hugo - work hard to produce select coffee while caring for the environment and terroir. New techniques, science and modern equipment are some of the tools they use to maintain current production and improve the quality of coffee they produce.

In addition to all the discipline in the harvest and after the harvest, they work hard to become Carbon Neutral certified using regenerative agriculture. For the past 10 years, focusing on choice coffee, scientific institutions such as EPAMIG - Minas Gerais Agricultural Research Company have been very important in ensuring constant quality over the years. "If we're smart about how we use our farm machinery and knowledge in terms of the needs of the property, we'll save money and avoid carbon emissions," Melo explains. Catiguá, Mundo Novo, Catucaí, Catuaí, Arara, IAC125RN and Bourbon are the main cultivated varieties, although an experimental field with various exotic varieties is maintained for research purposes. With a good structure and technique, Coffee O'Melo uses four different coffee processes: natural, honey route, anaerobic fermentation and aerobic fermentation.

Processing

The coffee was processed using aerobic fermentation.
